Wellbeing

At Engaines, we pride ourselves on how we care for everyone within our school community. Emotional wellbeing is the key to success.  This is true for adults and children alike. 

Our emotions play an important role in how we think and behave. The emotions we feel each day compel us to take action and influence the decisions we make about our lives. Controlling our emotions is vital to ensure we enhance our long-term wellbeing, enrich personal relationships, improve performance at work and even lead to better overall health.

Recognising our emotions and learning to manage them is one of the most important skills we can have. In fact people who are good at noticing how they feel and can calm themselves down or adjust their behaviour are more likely to do well in life, have healthy relationships and manage difficulties and set backs.

 As an adult, we unconsciously use emotion regulation strategies to cope with difficult situations many times throughout each day however, children need to learn these skills.

At Engaines we strive to develop these skills by teaching the children to first understand how they are feeling. Once the children can identify how they are feeling, we support them in developing strategies to overcome these feelings.

We do this by using a range of visual clues, posters and classroom displays. We talk about our feelings and how to cope with them, in our weekly PSHE sessions.  The children find it easier to relate to the pictures and colours, particularly the younger ones. Each emotion is related to a colour to make it easier for the children to identify.
